For people living with a neuromuscular condition, there is often a strong focus on physical health from doctors and allied health professionals, such as physiotherapists. However, looking after your mental wellbeing is just as important.

Physical activity can be a great way to relieve stress, but that's not always possible for people with neuromuscular conditions. The good news is that self-care doesn't have to be physically demanding. Here are some low-energy ways to support your mental wellbeing.

Give Yourself Permission To Rest

No one knows your body better than you do. If you're feeling fatigued or burnt out, try to recognise those signs and allow yourself time to rest. Rest isn't something you need to earn, it's an important part of looking after your health. It may not always feel productive (especially if you're someone who likes to stay busy), but giving your body and mind time to recharge can make a real difference.

Quiet Moments

Switching off your brain can be hard (don’t worry, we totally get it), which is why gentle activities can sometimes be the best way to go when it comes to looking after your mental health. Think getting lost in a book or listening to a podcast.

Activities such as colouring, journalling, digital art, photography, scrapbooking or creative writing can also be enjoyable ways to express yourself and focus your mind.

Stay Connected and Grounded

Self-care doesn't always have to be something you do alone. Calling a friend, joining an online community or watching a movie together virtually can help you stay connected with people who understand what you're going through.

Spending a few minutes outside in the fresh air, enjoying some sunshine, or spending time with a pet can also help you feel more grounded and relaxed.

Get it all out

Everyone has difficult days, and there will be times when looking after yourself feels harder than usual. That's okay. If you're struggling, consider talking with someone you trust, speaking with a mental health professional, or writing your thoughts in a journal. Putting your feelings into words can help you process them and make them feel more manageable.

Ideas from the community

Looking for more self-care ideas, here are what some of our community members do to look after their mental health!

“Baking helps me to unwind and relax. Putting on some good music and trying out a new recipe always brings me peace. I like that the end product can bring joy to others as well!” - Kalvin

“Stillness breaks are a vital part of my daily self-care, that I integrate into each day like eating lunch, or brushing my teeth. Sometimes this is a nap, more often it’s an eye mask and headphones streaming my latest podcast obsession or audiobook. I use it as a tool, not something I feel I have to earn. I often say I would fit in perfectly with European siesta lifestyle. It’s my essential refresh, mentally and physically.” - Tayla

“I like to play solo based video games. They allow me to disconnect and relax from everything stressful and are a nice distraction. Extra points are when you have a nice Spotify playlist to go along with gaming!” - J

“I like to take long hot showers. They allow me to relax, but also give me time to think alone with no distractions around me. Bonus points when you have a nice fragrant soap as well!” - Amy
